Making Sense of Executive Functioning Disorder

This four-session workshop is for parents and it will address questions such as “What are executive functioning skills? How does a lack of these skills manifest in and affect my child’s daily functioning, and what can I, as a parent, do to help?” The following topics will be discussed and you will end the workshop with practical suggestions to help your child.

  •     Impulse Control
  •      Cognitive Flexibility
  •      Task Initiation
  •      Working Memory
  •      Organization
  •      Self-Monitoring

This four-session workshop will be available in the summer. It will be available on line and in person at my office in Marietta, GA. Please contact me at yaelswerdlow@gmail if you are interested in attending or would like further information about the workshop.

Do these statements sound familiar?

“Jay never seems to have the books he needs to do his homework.”
“Rebecca gets stuck in her thoughts. She knows more, but…”
“Liam has so many ideas, yet he is unable to get started with his assignments.”
“Jenna just blurts out the answer or whatever she is thinking without processing what has been asked.”

Study Skills

As the demands made by the new common core curriculum increase, so too does the need for students to know how to read for evidence-based understanding, organize the information they have learned, and the need for students to be able to express back what they know or what they can infrer from what they have learned. In addition, as students move into Middle School or High School, the structure of the day is different, and it is essential that the students have good organizational skills from the get go. Working on Study skills is vital to your child’s success.

We offer individual tutoring sessions, or if you are able to get a group of your children’s friends together, we happily offer a number of “workshop” sessions for groups of students.

So often I hear from a student “I study so hard for my test and I think I have done well, and when I get my grade back, I failed or I did poorly, and I dont understand why.” Most often the cause of this problem is the student does not know how to study. The goals of our workshop and tutoring sessions are to teach the student how to study and not just put a “band aid” on the problem to improve grades. The final outcome should be improved grades, but more than that it should provide students with a set of strategies to use so that they can become independent, successful learners in all their learning.

The Study 4 Success tutoring sessions or workshops focus on 4 main aspects of learning that are central to success in the classroom.
